GUoM boss wants Malawi to produce pro golfers

Newly-elected Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) president Gabriel Kambale has said one of his dreams during his tenure is to see to it that the country produces a professional golfer.

Kambale, who replaced James Chimwaza, was elected as GUoM president at an AGM held in Blantyre recently. He said his other plans include stepping up the junior golf development programme and strengthening the national team.

“We have capable golfers who can turn professional and the one who comes to mind is Paul Chidale, who is one of the best golfers on the local scene.

“Of course, the challenge is resources, but with effort and hard work, everything is possible and I believe there can be a way to help local golfers achieve their dream of turning pro,” said Kambale who is himself one of the top golfers and national team manager.

Kambale added: “Paul is only 22 and plays off one handicap which is good, but sometimes it also has to do with personal commitment and dedication. If he is serious, we can approach companies to sponsor him.”

Chidale said he was flattered by Kambale’s remarks.

“As I have always said, I would love to become a professional golfer, but the challenge is resources because it is very expensive and one requires a lot of financial backing. But the fact that he has shown commitment is, in itself, a source of encouragement because he is the head of the sport in the country,” said Chidale

The last and only Malawian professional golfer was the late Gilliam Kapito.

Commenting on the junior golfers development programme, Kambale said: “Dingaan Chirwa [the chairperson] and his team are already doing a good work, but they need out support because we can only make strides by investing in the young golfers.”
